Intelligent Mobility International is a non-profit dedicated to providing mobility solutions to empower the global disabled community. Drawing from a base of professional and student designers and engineers working in conjunction with disability NGOs, IMI has developed a breakthrough wheelchair that marries affordability and durability in a design that can be locally and inexpensively repaired. Made from two re-purposed mountain bikes, the wheelchair can be produced and repaired in any bicycle shop in the world. IMI looks at wheelchairs as only a means to an end, not simply an end in itself, and its programs will work to empower its clients with different types of support to reach independence, including vocational training and micro-loans in later years for eligible clients to allow them to start their own businesses and bring themselves out of poverty. IMI's wheelchair was named one of 2008's top 10 world-changing innovations by Popular Mechanics.
IMI is looking for (1) financial donations from those who are interested in helping provide capital to launch the first year programs and (2) any business connections with suppliers or partners who can help scale the business model.
